The Hollywood Reporter reveals today that Hunter S. Thompson's "The Rum Diary" may finally be making its way to the big screen, with Johnny Depp set to channel his spirit again. Depp starred in another Thompson novel adaptation, "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas." Warner Independent Pictures will distribute the eventual film. Bruce Robinson is writing and directing the film version. The novel, which was set to go as a feature film in the year 2000, is based on Thompson's experience working as a freelance journalist in Puerto Rico in the late '50s. Depp will play a reporter at a struggling San Juan newspaper, where an erotic love triangle emerges. The project has gone through several incarnations in the past, with Benicio Del Toro set to make his directorial debut at one point.
